Officer, police service dog assaulted in downtown core

A London police dog is back on duty after suffering minor injuries in a downtown assault.

Police were called to the area of Dufferin Avenue and Colborne streets on Friday morning after a man damaged a home and and assaulted another man, who was not seriously injured.

When police arrived, they say they tried to negotiate with the suspect and deescalate the situation, but were unsuccessful. The man is alleged ot have then grabbed a piece of wood and assaulted both the officer and the dog,.

They both suffered minor injuries.

The suspect is also accused of damaging a police cruiser.

The officer used a taser on him, and he was arrested.

The man was taken to hospital, treated, and then sent back to the London police detention unit. In that process, police allege he assaulted a police cadet, who was not injured.

The police dog was treated by a vet, and, as of Monday morning, was back on duty.

A 32-year-old London man is charged with a assault with a weapon, assault a peace officer with a weapon, assault a peace officer, assault a law enforcement animal, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, and two counts of mischief under $5,000.
