A shooting in the southeast end of the city has left one man in hospital and two people in police custody.
According to London police, officers were called to the area of Vinewood Court and Cleveland Avenue around 12:15 p.m. Friday. When they arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital with what police said were "non-life threatening" injuries.
Two suspects were taken into custody and a firearm was recovered.
The London Free Press reports witnesses say the gun was found outside St. Sebastian elementary school, leading to a brief lockdown.
A letter from St. Sebastian principal Paula Trudell-Gregory went home to parents, which said the following:
"Dear parents/guardians,
An incident occurred today that I want to make you aware of.
As you may be aware, the school was placed on a temporary Lockdown followed by a Hold and Secure today out of an abundance of caution as a result of an incident in the community.
There was concern that a police suspect may have passed through the school’s field. On the advice of the police, the school went into a Lockdown, sweeps of the building occurred and additional precautions were put in place for the school day today, including having officers present for the remainder of the school day. In addition, today’s afternoon recess was held indoors. Students and staff were directed to report any suspicious activity.
The Hold and Secure was lifted after we were assured that the situation was under control.
As you know, safety is of paramount importance to all of us at St. Sebastian and the London District Catholic School Board. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child’s Catholic education.
Please remember to regularly speak with your children about personal safety practices.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the school office. I would ask that families refrain from speculation and circulating rumors that may appear online."
Police say the shooting was not a random act.
Anyone with information in relation to this incident is asked to call the London Police Service at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Information can also be sent in online anonymously to London Elgin Middlesex Crime Stoppers.
