The number of new cases of COVID-19 in the London-area remained in the single-digits on Wednesday.
The Middlesex London Health Unit logged three new infections over the past 24 hours, down from four on Tuesday and 14 on Monday. The last time the region saw back-to-back single-digit case increases was on October 10 and 11 when six and seven cases were recorded.
The total number of cases locally since the pandemic began sits at 14,512.
There were no additional COVID-19 related deaths in the region, leaving the death toll unchanged at 246.
Resolved cases are up by seven to 14,154. There are currently 112 active cases locally, down from 116 the previous day.
Hospitalizations in the area are up by one with nine COVID-19 patients in the care of the London Health Sciences Centre. Of those, five or fewer are listed in intensive care and none are in Children’s Hospital. There are five or fewer hospital employees who have tested positive for the virus.
Wilberforce Public School in Lucan is the only local facility dealing with an outbreak of COVID-19. There are 16 cases linked to the school. Students have been shifted to online learning for the week. The Thames Valley District School Board currently has 46 active cases at 25 of its schools. The London District Catholic School Board has three active cases at one elementary school.
Of the 562 new cases logged over the past six weeks, 67.1 per cent are among people who are either not vaccinated, not fully vaccinated or have not reached full immunity. The remaining 32.9 per cent were among those who had received both doses of the vaccine.
Southwestern Public Health reported 15 more COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, increasing the local case count since the pandemic began to 4,726. The health unit recorded a COVID-19 related death for a third straight day. The latest death brings the death toll up to 94. Resolved cases rose to 4,547. There are now 85 active cases in the two counties.
Ontario saw single-day COVID-19 case numbers climb back above 350 on Wednesday.
A total of 378 new infections were confirmed over the past 24 hours. That is up from Tuesday’s 321 but down from Monday’s 422. The latest cases bring the seven-day average caseload to 379, up from 366 a week ago.
Of the latest 378 new cases, 186 were among unvaccinated people, 12 involved partially vaccinated people, 143 were fully vaccinated individuals, and 41 had unknown vaccination status.
Ontario’s total case count since the start of the pandemic now sits at 601,086.
According to public health officials, there were five additional deaths related to the virus recorded Wednesday. The official death toll now stands at 9,886.
Hospitalizations in the province are up to 237 COVID-19 positive patients. That’s up by seven patients from the previous day. There are 137 people in intensive care, an increase of one since Tuesday and the number of people on a ventilator is up by three to 114.
The latest figures from the Ministry of Health shows of the patients with COVID-19 on general hospital wards, 81 were unvaccinated, 13 have had one dose, and 63 were fully vaccinated. Of those in the ICU, 66 are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated and 12 have received both doses.
Resolved cases across the province are up by 380 to 588,107. That leaves 3,093 known active cases of the virus in Ontario.
In the last 24 hour period, 32,950 COVID-19 tests were processed, up from 20,148 the previous day. Ontario’s positivity rate is now 1.4 per cent.
The province has administered just over 22.5 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine as of Tuesday night. There are more than 11 million people in Ontario who have received both doses of the vaccine and are considered fully inoculated.
