Medical Officer of Health, CEO to be evaluated at Board of Health meeting

A week after allegations that the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is a toxic professional environment, the two people at the top of the organization are going to have the quality of their work examined.

A performance review of the organization's Medical Officer of Health and CEO will take place on Wednesday. The review will be conducted by the board's CEO and MOH Performance Review Committee.

Emily Williams has been the organization's interim CEO since March.

Dr. Chris Mackie, the Medical Officer of Health, is currently on leave.

Last week, London News Today was the first to report that Mackie has been the subject of several workplace conduct complaints.

The exact number of complaints is unknown.

The review, however, had been decided on months ago before Mackie's leave was announced.

Board of Health chair Maureen Cassidy and Middlesex-London Health Unit communications staff haven't offered comment when asked whether Mackie's leave is related to work place conduct issues. Cassidy told London News Today she would not comment on what she called "a personnel issue".

Mackie's leave was announced to the public on November 15, however he's been absent from the MLHU's COVID-19 virtual media briefings since mid-October. Dr. Alex Summers was officially announced at Acting Medical Officer of Health the day Mackie's leave became public.

The Medical Officer of Health and CEO roles both belonged to Mackie until July of 2020, when the jobs were split. At the time, Mackie and MLHU staff said that was due to pandemic workload. However, several sources have told London News Today one of the reasons the job was split was so a CEO could act as an intermediary between Mackie and employees he had poor relationships with.

Neither the board, nor the health unit staff, have commented on whether Mackie is being paid during his leave.
