The province's police watchdog is investigating after a man was seriously injured during an altercation in the city early Thursday morning.
At around 8 a.m., London police officers were called to a home on Grey Street for a break and enter in progress. According to police, a suspect, identified as a 28-year-old man wanted by police for a number of other criminal offences, had taken off from the scene in a vehicle.
The vehicle, which police say had previously been reported stolen, was located by officers in the city's south end near Sholto Drive and Stroud Crescent. Police say the man tried to evade officers again by getting out of the vehicle and running off on foot, but members of the LPS Canine Unit captured him.
During the arrest, police say the suspect sustained a serious, but non-life threatening injury. He was then taken to the hospital for treatment.
"The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and has invoked their mandate," a release from London police read.
London police said it will not provide any other details about the incident as the matter has been turned over to the SIU.
On Friday, the SIU corroborated the information shared by London police, and provided several new details into the investigation.
Investigators said they learned that when the suspect left the vehicle and attempted to flee, a police dog bit the him. He was released from hospital yesterday. Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. One officer and three witnesses are also assisting with the investigation.
The SIU invokes its mandate if a member(s) of Ontario’s police services, select special constables and peace officers is involved in an incident that causes serious injury, death, the discharge of a firearm at a person or an allegation of sexual assault.
