Construction to start soon on $9.2M Eagle Heights school expansion

Work that will give students at an overcrowded London elementary school more space is about to get underway.

The Thames Valley District school board (TVDSB) made the announcement after a tender for the Eagle Heights Public School expansion project was awarded to Bronnenco Construction Ltd. The London-based construction firm won its bid at the end of May to carry out the badly needed work.

The $9.2 million expansion will provide space at the Oxford Street West school for an additional 300 students. It will also increase the size of the school’s library and administration area.

"This much needed renovation will help address enrolment pressure facing schools in west London due to unprecedented growth in the city," said Thames Valley's Education Director Mark Fisher. "As one of the fastest growing communities in the board, we look forward to welcoming new families, and introducing them to the many unique programs we offer in Thames Valley."

An exact start date for the construction has not been released, but the board did indicate it will begin soon. The expansion is slated to be completed by early 2025.

Eagle Heights Public was originally built for 680 students, but currently has more than 1,000. The school requires 18 portable classrooms to accommodate the large number of pupils.

The provincial government initially committed $7.2 million toward the expansion. Last month, it added an additional $2 million to complete the work.

"The funding for a new addition and internal renovations at Eagle Heights Public School in London is great news for our community," said Rob Flack, MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London. "This investment will ensure families and students have access to a quality learning environment in the years ahead."
