St. Thomas armed robbery suspect arrested in Quebec

A man wanted in an armed robbery at a St. Thomas electronics store nearly a year ago has been arrested in Quebec.

St. Thomas police began investigating after a man armed with a knife walked into The Source on Talbot Street on July 21, 2022. He allegedly threatened employees and then stole merchandise.

No one was hurt during the robbery.

Police believe the same man is responsible for similar robberies in Perth, Peterborough, and Quebec.

Officers with the criminal investigations branch worked continuously over the past 11 months to identify, locate, and charge a suspect in the case. That included releasing surveillance photos of the masked suspect to the public.

A 29-year-old Richmond Hill man was arrested in connection with the robbery last week. He has been charged with two counts of forcible confinement, two counts of robbery, and one count of trafficking in property obtained by crime.

St. Thomas Police Chief Marc Roskamp said the arrest is an example of the police service's commitment to public safety and holding offenders accountable for serious and violent crimes.

"A robust investigation has been underway for the past year which led to the identification and charging of the suspect who chose to victimize a business in our city and flee," said Roskamp. "We’re now focused on ensuring this individual faces prosecution and a strong custodial sentence. I commend our investigative units that have pursued this case diligently bringing justice to the victims involved."

The Richmond Hill man faces additional charges for incidents in Quebec and Peterborough.

He is scheduled to appear in St. Thomas court on July 11.
