Police accuse arson suspect of lying to avoid arrest

A London man faces several charges after police found a fire inside a home while responding to a report of possible gunfire in the city’s northeast end last week.

According to investigators, police were called to a residence on Arbour Glen Crescent at around 11:15 a.m. on June 18 after a citizen reported hearing gunshots inside the home.

When officers arrived, they located a man outside the home, who told police his home had been broken into.

The home was searched by police, and a fire was found inside. The London Fire Department was called and the blaze was put out. No injuries were reported.

Further investigation by police determined there was no evidence that a firearm had been set off. No firearm was located inside the home either. Police said they also did not locate a suspect relating to the break and enter.

Police said their probe revealed the victim provided false information to officers to avoid arrest.

The 30-year-old London man has since been charged with arson with disregard to human life, public mischief to divert suspicion from self and disobeying order of court.

Police have since released the accused from custody with a future court date of August 14.
