A man was tasered by London police after he allegedly threatened and tried to pelt officers with rocks in the downtown.
According to police, a plain-clothed officer was driving an unmarked police cruiser in the area of Wellington and York streets around 7 p.m. on Wednesday when a man hurled a rock at the passenger side door. The rock caused approximately $2,000 damage to the vehicle, police said.
The officer got out of the vehicle, identified himself, and told the man he was under arrest. The man is then alleged to have picked up and thrown several more rocks, which narrowly missed the officer.
More police were called to the scene after the man pulled out screwdrivers. When the additional officers arrived, the man reportedly raised a large rock at one of them before lunging toward police with the screwdrivers in his hands. The man was tasered by police, but still allegedly continued to resist arrest. With the help of several more officers, the man was finally arrested, police said.
A 49-year-old London man has been charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, and one count each of mischief under $5,000, and resisting arrest. The man was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
One of the police officers suffered minor injuries in the ordeal, but did not require medical attention, police said.
