New mural of iconic moment unveiled in downtown London

It's considered an iconic moment in the career of a country music legend.

A mural depicting Johnny Cash's on stage proposal to June Carter - which happened at the London Gardens during a show in February of 1968 - is now on a wall outside of Budweiser Gardens.

"We knew it was a moment in history, we knew it was something we had to capture," said Natalie Wakabayashi, the Director, Culture & Entertainment Tourism at Tourism London.

"When you think about London Gardens and the meaning it had for the city back then, it was a connection piece, it was a community hub, it was where everyone went for concerts and events and games. What was thought was Budweiser Gardens [is currently] the same thing for our city."

The mural is on north side of the arena, next to Gate 4. It overlooks Dundas Place, which Wakabayashi said was no accident.

"To be able to host events here and have this as a background, it's kind of a perfect spot for it."

A joint project of Tourism London, Budweiser Gardens, Downtown London, Dundas Place and young and free press, the mural's concept has been in the works since early in 2022.

"We're right across from the court house, and Johnny Cash had his occasional run-ins with the law," joked Andrew Gunn of young and free press. "From an art curator perspective I thought there was something beautiful about that placement as well."

The mural is being painted by Kevin Ledo - an artist from Montreal who has worked on murals in various cities of cultural figures like Alex Trebek and Leonard Cohen.

"There's one photograph that can can depict that [proposal]," said Ledo, of a photograph shared to the official Johnny Cash Instagram account in February of 2022. "I did a lot of research to figure out how to commemorate this and there's nothing better than this actual photograph."

Ledo added some colour behind Cash and Carter, noting that it's hard to make a bright mural of the artist dubbed 'The Man in Black.'

"It kind of has a spotlight effect. It works really well because they're actually on stage so it kind of gives the effect of spotlights on them," Ledo said. "I just wanted to bring some colourful aura magic to the moment with these shapes."

Some hot days and rainy weather slightly delayed the completion of the mural, Ledo said. He hopes it will be done on Thursday.
