London warns of water testing scam

Telemarketer and door-to-door scams seem to be on the rise in the Forest City.

The City of London released a public service announcement on Wednesday to warn Londoners of salespeople claiming to be contractors conducting water tests on its behalf.

According to the announcement, a number of homeowners have reported a caller, claiming to work with the city, who tried to schedule an appointment to inspect an internal water valve or to perform a water quality test.

"These are false representations," the municipality said. "The city does not use contractors for water quality testing, nor does it sell residents water treatment devices."

Homeowners are reminded that;

•No door-to-door salespeople are authorized to make a health-based test on your water

•Door-to-door sales of water purifiers, filters, softeners, and treatment devices are prohibited (unless you initiate the transaction)

•Door-to-door water tests do not tell you about water safety

•Chemical trickery may make your water look brown just because of natural mineral content

•London’s drinking water is sourced from Lake Huron and Lake Erie and is treated to surpass provincial quality standards

If there is a water quality issue, any contact will be made by a verified city employee.

If you believe you may have been misled by a telemarketer or door-to-door salesperson, you can identify a scam or fraud here.
