A retired father of two got to experience the thrill of a lifetime after learning he’d won $100,000 on an Ontario 49 ticket.
George Koumanis, a 77-year-old from London, recently learned he won the second prize during the June 17 draw. He said he’s been playing the lottery for decades and couldn’t believe he’d finally won such a large prize.
“I’ve been playing for about 30 years,” said Koumanis. “There have been some big winners in my community, but now it was my turn!”
Koumanis said he decided to check his ticket while at a store picking up a few groceries when he learned of his win.
“The cashier came up to me and said, ‘Sir, you just won $100,000.’ I was in shock!”
Afterward, Koumanis immediately shared the good news with his daughter, who had a hard time believing her father at first, until he sent her a photo from the lottery terminal. Koumanis explained she was overjoyed, sharing her dad’s excitement.
When asked what he plans to do with his new-found wealth, Koumanis told the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) that he wishes to share it with his family, stating how grateful he is for them and his life.
“I’m very happy for my children and grandchildren,” expressed Koumanis “This country gave us everything when we came here from Greece. I love our life here.”
Koumanis purchased his winning ticket at a Petro Canada location at 1845 Adelaide Street North.
