Balanced Beginning is a new group-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) program for perinatal mental health being launched this fall in Oxford and Elgin counties.
It is meant for individuals who are pregnant or have a child under 18 months of age and are experiencing depression, anxiety, or are feeling down or overwhelmed.
Up to 80 per cent of people feel sad, empty, or anxious after they have given birth, Southwestern Public Health said. Even if someone is not diagnosed with postpartum depression, negative feelings that linger or worsen over time may be a postpartum mood disorder (PPMD).
Balanced Beginning offers help and support of mental wellness for those who may be experiencing a PPMD.
The nine-week program features a virtual group setting with a public health nurse to learn skills, strategies, and tools to help manage depression and anxiety.
Balanced Beginning is free, confidential, and doesn't require a referral from a health care provider.
The unique program is being offered in Oxford County, Elgin County, and the City of St. Thomas.
