Break-in suspect accused of assaulting cop, damaging property

A London man faces nearly a dozen charges after a police officer was assaulted, a home broken into, and several crashes in the west-end of the city.

The incident began between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Sunday when a man broke into a home on Ed Ervasti Lane and stole several items while the homeowners slept. The man took off on foot.

Roughly an hour later, a man drove a vehicle into the rear of a property on Little Grey Street. A resident of the home approached the man who then drove the vehicle through the yard and through a fence at the back of the property. This caused significant damage to the yard and fence, police said.

At 10 a.m. a person saw the same vehicle drive through a four-way stop at the intersection of Kain’s and Shore roads. The driver ended up backing his vehicle into one that was behind him in a gated community on River Bend. The collision damaged both the car and a closed gate.

After taking off from the gated area the vehicle was seen blowing through another stop sign before being spotted by London police stopped in the middle of the road on Little Grey Street. The driver was arrested and taken to police headquarters.

Property stolen during the break-in at Ed Ervasti Lane was found.

While being escorted back to a cell the man allegedly became uncooperative and began to physically fight with officers. One officer suffered minor injuries before additional officers were sent to assist.

A 23-year-old London man has been charged with two counts each of mischief under $5,000, dangerous driving, and failure to stop at the scene of a crash, and one count each of assaulting a peace officer, break and enter and theft, driving while under suspension, and no insurance. The accused was scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Approximately $4,500 damage was caused during the incident, police said.
