Battery assembly work will bring hundreds of new jobs to CAMI plant

General Motors Canada has announced an upcoming project at its Ingersoll facility that will support nearly 300 new jobs at the auto assembly plant.

Starting next year, CAMI Assembly will begin building battery modules, supporting GM’s plan to ramp up electric vehicle (EV) production volume during the second quarter of 2024.

“In addition to being Canada’s first large-scale EV manufacturing plant, soon the team will add EV battery module assembly to the site, demonstrating innovation, flexibility, and opportunity during this historic time of transformation in the industry,” said President and Managing Director of GM Canada Marissa West.

The batteries will be assembled in the newly retooled, 400,000 square foot facility in four steps:

Battery cells will be arranged into small stacks of cells, where sealer and retaining clips are applied.

The mini stacks will then be assembled into full modules, where cooling plates, insulation, and electrical components are installed.

Modules will then be placed into vehicle packs, where cooling lines and additional electrical components are installed.

Finally, vehicle battery packs will be subjected to final testing before they are sealed and transferred to the vehicle assembly line.

GM Canada said the project plays a “critical role” in GM’s goals for an all-electric future.

Last December, the first electric delivery van rolled off the line at CAMI, less than a year after union members ratified a deal to begin production of the BrightDrop Zevo 600.
