The London-Middlesex Humane Society is one step closer to funding its new home.
Earlier this week, the shelter's 'New Home. New Hope' campaign announced a $13,388 donation from the Elevate Real Estate Group.
According to Executive Director Steve Ryall, that means the Humane Society's move has reached about 86 per cent of its needed funding.
"That leaves about 2.3 million dollars to go," he said.
Construction on the Humane Society's new home is expected to begin any day, with the hope that they'll be in the new location by the summer of 2024.
The new facility will be able to house about 400 animals compared to the current 215.
"The shelter is definitely at capacity and we're doing what we can to prepare animals for adoption and find them their forever home," Ryall said. He added that the shelter has been full for the last year or two.
Ryall said that the public sometimes doesn't understand how full the shelter is, as often there are only 15 to 20 animals up for adoption at a time. "Animals are in our care under two different ways, available or not available."
When an animal is surrendered to the Humane Society time needs to be taken to make sure the animal is healthy and adjusted to its new circumstances. Once those processes are finished the animal becomes available for adoption.
Every dollar counts for the shelter when it comes to reaching its funding goal, but there are other ways to help, if money is tight.
"Any type of physical donation as far as food or product that we use is always helpful," Ryall said. Another option is to foster an animal, as space at the shelter remains an issue.
