Section of Southdale Road closing for 72-hour, round the clock work

Construction crews will be working round the clock this week to ensure the closure of a main artery in southwest London only lasts for 72-hours.

Starting Monday, Southdale Road West between Colonel Talbot Road and Boler Road will be closed to all traffic. The closure is to allow crews working on the construction of a roundabout at Southdale and Colonel Talbot roads to install watermains, storm sewers, and maintenance holes beneath the intersection. The road is expected to reopen late Wednesday.

"We recognize this is a significant disruption during an already busy construction season. To complete this work as quickly as possible and reopen the road, crews will be working full 24-hour days during the closure," city officials said in a statement.

The city also noted that the 72-hour summer shutdown will mean a ten-day closure of the intersection planned for the fall can be scaled back.

"The Southdale Road West and Colonel Talbot Road intersection was initially planned for a full 10-day closure in November of this year to complete infrastructure work beneath the intersection," city officials said. "Part of this work is being completed earlier than anticipated... and will shorten the closure period needed in the fall."

During the 72-hour closure, traffic will be detoured off of Southdale onto Westdel Bourne, Deadmans Road, Homewood Lane, and Pack Road. The intersection will remain partially open throughout the work.

The reconfiguring of the intersection to a roundabout will improve safety for all road users and help accommodate existing and future travel demand, according to the city. The cost is estimated at just under $9 million. The bulk of the construction should be completed by December with a few finishing touches to be carried out in the spring of 2024.
