Fatal crash blamed on 'monumental' flooding

A transport truck driver is dead after the roadway collapsed under him northwest of Glencoe.

Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Middlesex-London Paramedic Service, and Southwest Middlesex Fire were called to the single-vehicle crash on Dundonald Road shortly after 10 p.m. on Wednesday.

"It was for the report of a transport truck that had fallen through the road," OPP Constable Jeffery Hare said in a video posted to X, the social media platform formally known as Twitter.

The sinkhole appeared after torrential rain fell across the region leading to “monumental” flooding.

According to police, the 59-year-old driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

"It's obviously a hard day for everyone involved," Hare said, acknowledging the first responders and family of the deceased driver.

Dundonald Road between Buttonwood Drive and Carolinian Drive will be closed for several weeks for repairs.

Hare said that a number of roads experienced flooding and washed out areas and urged drivers to travel cautiously and patiently while road crews work.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for much of southwestern Ontario Wednesday, warning heavy downpours could dump between 50 to 100 mm on rain. The severe rainfall flooded and washed out numerous roads. Multiple collisions were reported.

A section of Highway 402 between Kerwood and Nauvoo roads was shutdown for more than seven hours after becoming submerged by a river of brown water. It was reopened shortly after 2 a.m. on Thursday.
