Police in St. Thomas turned up thousands of dollars worth of stolen tools and equipment from the back of a suspicious U-Haul earlier this week.
According to police officials, at around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a call about a U-Haul in the area of Wellington and Ross streets that was missing a large portion of its windshield. Police located the vehicle and its two occupants a short distance away and conducted a traffic stop.
During a search, officers recovered $100,000 in stolen tools, equipment and property in addition to several pieces of personal identification and bank cards reported stolen from elsewhere in Ontario and Quebec.
A 39 and 40-year-old, both of no fixed address, were arrested.
The 39-year-old accused is charged with:
Six counts of possession of property obtained by crime
Failure to Comply with probation order
Obtaining by false pretence
Obstructing a peace officer
The 40-year-old faces charges of:
Three counts of possession of a schedule two substance (methamphetamine, opioid cocaine)
Three counts of property obtained by crime
Obstructing a peace officer
Two counts of failing to comply with a probation order
Driving while suspended
Driving without a licence
Operating an unsafe vehicle
Both accused appeared in court on September 26.
