A 16-year-old girl is facing charges after a south London grocery store employee was assaulted with a knife while trying to stop a suspected shoplifter.
According to London police, a teenage girl walked into the grocery store on Wellington Road South, just north of Commissioners Road, around 2 p.m. on Monday. The teen allegedly placed store items inside her clothes before running from the store without attempting to pay.
When an employee tried to stop the teen in the parking lot, the girl pulled an Exacto knife and assaulted the worker, police said.
Police were called and arrested a suspect nearby after a short foot chase. Two Exacto knives were seized.
The store employee did not suffer any physical injuries, police said.
A 16-year-old girl, who cannot be named because of her age, has been charged with one count of robbery with violence. She was scheduled to appear in London court in relation to the charge on Tuesday.
