Police dog helps catch pair accused of stealing vehicle

London police called on its canine unit to help nab a pair of suspects accused of stealing a vehicle in the city's east end Tuesday night.

According to police, at around 9:30 p.m., officers were contacted about a vehicle stolen from a home on Toulon Crescent. The theft was caught on video, and police were called immediately after.

A short time later, police located the vehicle near a townhome complex on Wavell Street. Officers observed two suspects getting out and taking off on foot, leading police to chase after them. One of the two, identified as a 27-year-old woman, was caught immediately and arrested by officers.

The second suspect, later identified as a 42-year-old man, initially got away, leading police to call in a K-9 officer to assist. Police officials say the man was found a short time later thanks to the police dog.

As a result, the pair are jointly charged with theft of a motor vehicle. The man is also charged with failing to stop for police and dangerous operation. The woman faces an additional charge of failing to comply.

The 42-year-old London man is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, while the 27-year-old London woman will wait several weeks for her court appearance, scheduled on April 18.
