The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has ended its probe of an October 2023 incident in which a man was injured during an arrest by London police.
In the early morning hours of October 29, officers were called to a restaurant on a complaint about a man threatening people with a knife. It was the second time the officers responded to a call concerning the man, who was seen walking on Kent Street near Talbot Street.
Police forcibly got the man to stop and subdued him after a struggle. An ambulance took the man to hospital where he was treated for a broken left arm.
SIU Director Joseph Martino wrote in his report that the suspect's broken arm was indeed a result of the struggle during his arrest. However, there was no criminal wrongdoing on the part of London police.
"With respect to the force used by the police in aid of the complainant’s arrest, I am unable to reasonably conclude that it was unlawful," wrote Martino. "The weight of the evidence indicates that the complainant did not surrender to arrest peacefully but, rather, struggled against the officers’ efforts to have him restrained."
