UPDATE: Special weather statement for Wednesday evening ended

Heavy rain and strong wind gusts prompted a Special Weather Statement for parts of Southwestern Ontario.

Environment Canada issued the statement for London-Middlesex, Oxford, and Southern Perth counties shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

"Some thunderstorms will be accompanied by gusty winds, small hail and heavy rain," the weather agency said. Adding that some areas could see close to 40 millimetres of rainfall in a matter of hours.

"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads," Environment Canada added.

Just after 7 p.m., the statement had ended for Western Middlesex County and a new one was issued for Northern Perth County.

In Southern Perth County the statement was upgraded to a Rainfall Warning. Municipalities between St. Marys and Bryanston could see between 50 to 75 mm of rain accumulate by the time the storms end.

Residents are warned to expect wind gusts of 70 to 80 km/h, which can toss loose objects and break branches off trees.

The rainfall alerts all ended around 9 p.m.
