Some residents in east London were told to keep their windows closed overnight due to a fire that caused "extreme" damage to a vacant building.
Firefighters were called before 10 p.m. Sunday to 720 Cabell St., a property at the end of the dead-end street northeast of the intersection of Rectory Street and Hamilton Road. When they arrived, the building was engulfed in flames and thick, black smoke was billowing into the air.
Residents southeast of the building were told to keep their windows and doors closed to keep the potentially harmful smoke out of their homes. Fire officials anticipated the smoke would linger in the air throughout the overnight hours.
Crews took a defensive fire attack with aerial operations and extinguished the blaze with exceptional coordination, fire officials said.
"Due to the extreme damage to the vacant buildings the cause will be undetermined, no dollar loss available as these were vacant," the fire department said in a social media post.
