Bruce Power Improves Safety Rating

Bruce Power has seen an improvement its safety ratings for 2014.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's draft safety performance review awarded Bruce A station an overall rating of satisfactory, while Bruce B improved to fully satisfactory, joining the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station as the only nuclear stations in the country to receive the CNSC's top safety rating.

The CNSC awarded fully satisfactory ratings to both Bruce A and Bruce B stations for conventional health and safety, waste management and security, while Bruce B also received a fully satisfactory grade for operating performance.

President and CEO Duncan Hawthorne says the report card confirms what he already knew about the operational and safety performance on the site, adding it's testimony to the quality of Bruce Power's employees.

He says they expect Bruce A will improve to a fully satisfactory overall grade next year.

"From an operational point of view, we actually see Bruce A and Bruce B as exactly the same performance now, and frankly, Bruce A is marginally better than Bruce B. We're expecting that next time the review is carried out, that we'll see Bruce A have a similar regulatory score," says Hawthorne.

Hawthorne will be in Ottawa on Thursday, August 20 to appear before the CNSC to discuss the report card results.
