The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance is asking residents to plan ahead for possible medical issues that could occur during the holidays.
Many healthcare providers close their offices or reduce hours, and that can lead to longer than usual Emergency Room wait times for patients who don't require immediate care.
The Medical Program Director for Emergency Medicine says being prepared might help people avoid an visit to the ER.
Dr. Miriam Mann says people should ensure they have enough medication and medical equipment to get them through the holidays. That can include prescriptions, inhalers or glucometers.
You can also check on you're family doctor's holiday schedule and if they offer any back up coverage.
People overwhelmed with feelings of seasonal depression, sadness, distress and anxiety can also call the Huron Perth Helpline and Crisis Response Team 24-7 at 1-888-829-74-84
Telehealth Ontario also has a registered nurse on call to help people connect to the most appropriate level of care. That number is 1-866-797-0000
If symptoms include broken bones, wounds needing stitches, pain and tightness of the chest or shortness of breath, you should go to the emergency department.
The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance offers ER services at Clinton Public, St. Marys Memorial, Seaforth Community, and Stratford General Hospitals.
Patients should remember their OHIP card, other medical insurance information, and a list of current medications.
“Our Doctors and Nurses are here if anyone needs us,” stresses Dr. Mann.
“We ask those visiting our Emergency Departments over the holidays to be patient,” concludes Dr. Mann. “We know that this is the last place many people want to be. As always we will see our sickest patients first and we are committed to providing timely, safe quality care to all our patients and their families.”
Those bringing children are asked to bring diapers, blankets and other comfort items. If your condition worsens while waiting in the department please notify a staff member immediately.
