After more than a decade without a team, junior hockey is returning to Wiarton.
South Bruce Peninsula council has signed a three-year arena use agreement with a team in the outlaw Junior-A Greater Metro Hockey League to relocate to Wiarton in time for the 2016-2017 season.
Though town officials declined to say which team was moving to Wiarton, the arena hosting agreement identifies the owner of the club as Joe Ziel, who is currently the owner and coach of the Grey Highlands Bravehearts.
Mayor Janice Jackson says it's an exciting day to finally bring competitive level hockey back to Wiarton.
"These hockey teams, we've always seen that they get very involved in their community. They get out to all the events and they get very involved, so it's a two-way street, I think it's going to be a wonderful addition to Wiarton," says Jackson.
The team will be known as the Wiarton Redmen, a name that was once used by the intermediate and senior level club that played out of Wiarton until 2002, while the Wiarton Wolves folded from Western Jr. C a year later, following the 2002-2003 season.
