Ausable Bayfield Offers Spring Water Awareness Program

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority is offering Spring Water Awareness education to a dozen local schools this February and March.

When the temperatues rise, and the snow melts, youth need to know to avoid cold, high fast flowing water and thin ice.

The so called SWAP program is offered on an annual basis to schools in the watershed who apply.

The students learn about the dangers of seasonal water hazards, such as slippery stream banks and fast-running frigid waters

“Water is cold, river banks are slippery, and young people should stay away from rivers and streams in late winter and in spring,” said Denise Iszczuk,

Conservation Educator with Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA). “This program has taught thousands of local students to stay away from high and fast-flowing water and to avoid ice, which may be thin.”

Conservation educators provide the SWAP program at a time of year when waterways pose the highest level of risk to children. “When it gets warmer and the spring rains come, snow disappears,”Iszczuk said.

Here are some suggested spring water awareness tips for young people:

- Don’t play near the water when the water is high or fast-flowing. Always have a buddy.

- Always have an adult check if the ice is thick enough before you step on it.

- Avoid water in winter and early spring but if you are near water always wear a life jacket.

- Read warning signs near water.

- Never play by dams and water control structures.

- Always tell an adult where you are playing and when you’ll be home.

- Call 911 or get a parent or guardian for all water-related emergencies.
