Local MP's: Midwestern Ontario Losing Out with Federal Budget

Justin Trudeau's Liberal Government tabled its first budget on Tuesday which projects a deficit this year of just over $29 billion dollars.

And that's a number that doesn't seem to sit well with two local Midwestern Ontario MP's.

Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller says the Federal Budget is nothing short of irresponsible.

"Well ultimately for all Canadians, and that includes my riding, is this is going to lead to tax increases. They haven't said that yet, but we all know, no other way to do it, is to raise taxes," says Miller.

Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb feels Tuesday's Federal Budget does nothing to help rural areas like Midwestern Ontario and feels this region of the province is essentially losing out.

"If you look at the major components in our riding, agriculture is a huge economic driver, there's really nothing new in the budget for agriculture that's going to move the dial for farmers in our area and if you look at some of the money they've allocated for cleaning up our Great Lakes, the money doesn't go to Lake Huron," says Lobb.

The budget promises $2.7 billion dollars in infrastructure spending for large urban building projects and roads and highways, something MP Ben Lobb feels doesn't even apply to rural Ontario.

"Obviously we don't qualify for those at all. We have issues is our communities, we need good roads, we need good water, we need good sewer systems to keep our Great Lakes protected," adds Lobb.

MP Larry Miller was also disappointed with no mention of agriculture in Tuesday's Federal Budget.

"There wasn't one mention about agriculture, not one mention," says Miller, adding, "to not even have agriculture on their radar, it doesn't surprise me but you know, you'd think at least they'd give it a token mention somewhere."

Miller says he's going to fight to make sure his riding of Bruce-Grey-Owen sound gets its fair share in infrastructure funding.

The 2016 Federal Budget also includes billions toward First Nations peoples and a revamped Canada Child Benefit with a Federal deficit of more than $100 billion dollars over the next five years.
