Building Bridges Aiming For July Goal

A campaign to help improve the infrastructure at local schools is taking a big step.

Building Bridges To Our Future is raising money for improvements and accessibility additions to the track and field at FE Madill Secondary and for playground equipment at Maitland River Elementary.

If the committee can raise $30,000 by the end of July then the work on the track can start this fall. The Avon Maitland District School Board has already committed $90,000 to the project. That money will be used for engineering, drainage and the accessibility paths. The Building Bridges group has already raised $85,000.

Teresa Becker is a volunteer with the Building Bridges campaign.

"It's kind of like a hub for all or our sport activities for our communities," says Becker. "You have soccer, you have your community track groups. Once this work is done and the track will be fully accessible. Seniors will be able to get down there and walk and a level surface."

There are many ways to donate including at Canada Helps.

And the drive to raise money for playground equipment at Maitland River Elementary continues with a can and bottle drive on Saturday between 10am and noon in Wingham, Belgrave and Bluevale.
