Yesterday (Sunday, July 10th) marked a very special day for one of North Huron's own.
Canadian Author, Alice Munro, turned 85 years old.
Born in 1931 in Wingham, Ontario, Munro is known around the globe for her short story writing, many of which are based in Huron County, Ontario.
The Town of Wingham, located within the Municipality of North Huron (which also encompasses Belgrave, Blyth and Whitechurch) is also home to the Annual Alice Munro Festival of the Short Story.
Connie Goodall is the Economic Development Officer for the Municipality of North Huron and has been involved with the festival since its rejuvenation four years ago.
"She (Munro) writes good stories, she has a garden here just outside the North Huron Museum (in Wingham), we have an Alice Munro nook inside the museum and the short story competition that actually goes with the Alice Munro Festival," says Goodall. "Alice Munro is significant to all of Huron County, certainly not just to Wingham, and we are really proud that she calls this area her home town."
Munro spent many years living in Victoria, British Columbia and is also a three time recipient of the Governor General's Award for Literature as well as the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013.
She currently resides in Clinton, Ontario located in Huron County.
