Provincial Funding for Hospice Care in Owen Sound

The Residential Hospice of Grey Bruce will have two additional beds available when Chapman House opens this spring in Owen Sound.

The provincial government has committed an additional $210,000 in annual funding for the palliative care facility to boost its capacity to eight beds, bringing the total funding to $840,000 annually.

Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Long Term Care John Fraser says it's an excellent investment for the government, and proof the province recognizes the value of the hospice and the need for additional end-of-life care in the area.

"It's really is quite incredible what they're doing, one of the things I've seen in a lot of small and medium-sized communities is communities really coming together and rallying around what's really important to us, what's really important to our families," says Fraser. "How we care for each other when we are at the end of life and at our most vulnerable is something that is really important."

The cost of construction of the $4-million facility is being entirely funded by the community, and Executive Director Scott Lovell says he hopes this kind of announcement will help encourage more donations as they enter the final $1-million of the fundraising campaign.

Lovell says they remain on-budget and on-schedule to open this spring, though with any construction project, winter weather will be the determining factor.
