Youth Initiative Opportunity In Huron-Bruce

The OPP want to engage more youth in the area and it could come in the form of supporting a summer camp.

The OPP Youth Foundation currently supports youth camping initiatives in Essex and Central Ontario.

Now there may opportunity to do the same in Huron-Bruce.

John Cain, chief superintendent regional commander of the West Region, says they are able to partner with camps, and the foundation pays the camp fees for kids to give them opportunities.

"Part of that is about increasing their social awareness, working with officers as volunteers so that they can see leadership traits, and build their self-confidence," says Cain.

He says with social media, youth have access to impressions from around the world.

"We have to be aware that impressions that youth can have now are not just what they see in this country," he says.

Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson was involved in summer camps growing up and sees this as a pay-it-forward opportunity.

"When I learned there is an OPP Youth Foundation and their sole purpose was to offer opportunities for young people to grow their leadership skills, grow their social skills and build confidence, I thought there was a perfect opportunity," says Thompson.
There are few details at this time but there are plans for a fundraising launch next April involving the OPP and other first responder groups.

The camp that would be used is one of the details to be worked out but Thompson says this area has a number of possibilities.
