Bruce Power's Unit 5 Undergoes $135M Maintenance Program

Bruce Power has removed Unit 5 from service for a $135-million maintenance and inspection.

That project will last about 90 days, and is expected to help extend the life of the Bruce Power site.

Bruce Power says that means they can provide a stable low cost source of electricity now and in the future.

Bruce Power provides 30% of Ontario's electricity .

In 2016, Bruce Power was paid 6.6 cents per kilowatt-hour for power, compared to an average residential price of about 11 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Cobalt-60 will also be harvested during the inspection and maintenance program.

Nordion processes the material which sterilizes 40 % of the worlds single use medical devices like gloves and stents.

“During the maintenance and inspection program, thousands of tasks will be completed by Bruce Power staff, as well as hundreds of contractors who have been hired from across the province for their expertise in maintenance activities,” says Len Clewett, Bruce Power’s chief nuclear officer. “Our Life-Extension Program and other site activities directly and indirectly create and sustain 22,000 jobs and inject about $4-billion annually into our local and provincial economies through the procurement of materials, hiring of skilled labour and investing of private dollars into publicly owned assets.”
