Huron County council has agreed to pave the shoulder of one county road to provide a path for cyclists.
The road in question runs from the top of the hill in Saltford to Benmiller.
Councillor Bernie MacLellen says it's a very scenic road and one that is well-travelled by both cyclists and joggers so it would get lots of exposure. He adds it's scheduled to be re-paved this year, so if it isn't done now the opportunity won't present itself for another twenty years.
MacLellan also points out by paving the shoulder the county eliminates the cost of having to re-gravel the shoulder.
MacLellan says it might take a couple of years to determine if paving the shoulders is a good idea, but if it is, it could be a significant tourism draw for the county.
MacLellan is quick to add that he's not suggesting every county road should eventually have paved shoulders, but it could lead the way to creating a network of roads with paved shoulders that would connect to things like the Goderich to Guelph Trail and create a popular cycling venue through the county.
County council agreed to take the money for the paving out of reserves.
