Saugeen Shores Debates Location Of New Indoor Swimming Pool

Saugeen Shores council is being asked to look at an alternate location if it goes ahead with building a new swimming pool.

Councillor Don Matheson has tabled a notice of motion asking council to consider Cameron Park in Port Elgin as an alternate location for a new indoor pool.

Council has declared the arena complex as its preferred location for a new pool, but Matheson says there's plenty of good reasons to consider Cameron Park.

He says high school students are among the biggest users of the current pool because of its location at Saugeen District Secondary School, and that usage would surely decline if the new pool is built at The Plex.

"If we move the pool from the present high school location or close to it, you're going to lose all the kids that take the swimming program from the high school because they can't get [to The Plex] in time for their classes," says Matheson.

Cameron Park is adjacent to SDSS and is currently used for two ball diamonds, but Matheson says they are in need of repair, like most of the ball diamonds in Saugeen Shores.

He says the new recreation master plan suggests a new ball diamond complex and a new pool at Cameron Park could help get both projects underway.

Matheson says his motion also asks municipal staff to investigate structural designs other than traditional brick-and-mortar, in hopes of finding ways to save money on a multi-million dollar new pool build.

The motion is set to come before Saugeen Shores council at its April 10 meeting.
