One of the Toronto Blue Jays' all-time greats says fans should not be worried about an opening day loss.
Roberto Alomar was in Tiverton on Tuesday to tour the Bruce Power site and says there's plenty to be excited about this season, despite the Blue Jays extra innings loss in Baltimore on Monday to open the 2017 season.
He says the talent is there to make it back to the playoffs, but like every other team, health will be the key.
"I have to be positive, I think they're going to be good, they have a great team," says Alomar. "Hopefully, they can stay healthy, I think if you can stay healthy throughout the whole year, a lot of great things are going to happen."
The hall of fame second baseman is working with the Blue Jays as a special advisor, largely helping the minor league players along their route to the major leagues. Alomar says he likes to work with those players on the mental side of baseball.
"It's a long journey, it's a lot of work, but if you want to succeed in this game, you have to believe in your talent and have some good work habits," says Alomar. "If you work hard and you believe in yourself, you will succeed in this game."
He has also spent the past four years working with Baseball Canada's Junior National Team at spring training in Florida, adding it's his way of giving back to the game in Canada.
Despite that, Alomar says he has no plans to pursue a coaching career in the game.
