Local Rivers And Streams Rising Again

There is a watershed conditions update on Tuesday from the Maitland Conservation Flood Forecast Centre.

Over the past 24 hours, the Maitland River watershed has received an average of 32 mm of rain. The highest rainfall amount was recorded in Benmiller with 47 mm.

Headwater areas of the Maitland watershed will peak this afternoon, however, the levels from Wingham downstream to Goderich will continue to rise until Wednesday morning.

The main branches in the Nile Mile River watershed are expected to continue to rise until early Wednesday.

The Maitland River was almost 95% ice free before the rainfall. There was one large ice jam in the Auburn area. The rising river may increase the size of this ice jam or move it further downstream.

While significant flooding is not expected, levels in streams and rivers may reach or exceed bank full conditions, resulting in some minor flooding in low-lying areas.

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority is also reporting rising stream levels and a quick runoff because of the rainfall and milder temperatures.

Flows in the smaller watercourses are expected to peak through the day Tuesday, with larger rivers peaking overnight and into Wednesday.

There is a risk of an ice jam in the Lower Ausable River, near Thedford. Municipal staff are monitoring known ice jam areas.

A flood watch is in place for the entire Grand River watershed. Parts of the watershed received 25-35 mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours.

Water levels upstream of Drayton are rising and are expected to peak at close to Level 1 warning levels Tuesday.    Township of Mapleton staff is warning Drayton residents in the Level 1 flood zone near the fairgrounds area.

The low-level bridge upstream of St. Jacobs remains closed at Three Bridge Rd. The bridge is flooded.

Water levels upstream of New Hamburg are expected to peak at or close to Level 1 warning levels.
