The two summer day camps run by the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority are already half full for this year.
The one-week day camps for children between the ages of 6 and 9 runs from July 23 to the 27. The second camp for youngsters from ages 10 to 12 goes from August 7 to the 11. The camps are at the Morrison Dam Conservation Area.
Conservation Educator Denise Izczuk says the goal of the camps is to introduce young people to the local eco-systems and they try to make it as hands-on as possible so the campers get comfortable with the things that live in their own backyard.
She adds it's not unusual for graduates of the older group to discover they have an interest in what they learned at the camp and come back to work at the camp as Junior Conservationists.
Iszczuk says they're also always looking for high school students interested in volunteering.
More information can be found on the ABCA web site.
"We try to make it as hands-on as we can by investigating those environments and discovering what lives in there and even handling what things are in there if they're comfortable", says Iszczuk. "We can show them how to if they're not comfortable and get a general familiarity with what lives in their own backyard."
