The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority released its completed watershed report at the recent Conservation Awards Dinner.
Healthy Watersheds Supervisor Mari Veliz explains the report cards are done every five years and this is the third one they've done.
She points out progress in things like forest cover and water quality is always very slow but she's encouraged by the trends their data collection is showing.
“I always encourage people to look very closely at their own local watersheds, their own backyard creeks and see the little changes. We are making little improvements along the way and that's indeed how we are going to make a difference for some of the more broad environmental issues that we see,” she explained. “It is really important at that scale to acknowledge the work that gets done. What we've noticed is that when people own the issues and own the solutions then they're able to talk to their neighbours much more effectively than other agencies can.”
Veliz says she always encourages people to look very closely at their own local watersheds, their own backyard creeks and see the little changes because little improvements are being made. It's those little improvements that will eventually make a difference in the bigger picture," she says.
