Sporting Excellence Celebrated In Listowel

Excellence in local sports was celebrated in North Perth Monday night.

Council invited the local U-18 girls curling team that won the U-18 Provincial Championship, as well as the Listowel Atom B OMHA Champions. With the Cyclones also winning their first Sutherland Cup this year, Mayor Julie Behrns says the municipality is very proud of their local sports teams.

"We are most certainly so proud as a municipality of all our junior teams," she says. "We can't say enough about the support and dedication of the parents, the youth, and especially our coaches. They take the time out of their busy schedules to reinforce everything that is good about playing on a team."

Mayor Behrns says the Cyclones set a great example for other local teams, and that it is extremely exciting to have them win in the brand New Steve Kerr Memorial Complex.

"They have overwhelmed us with such a great season and I think they know how important having such a great season was to the municipality," she says. "I know the municipality showed up and supported them both at the home games, but also the away games, as well."

The mayor laughed when asked if Listowel should put a City of Champions sign at the edge of town. She says if local teams keep doing so well, maybe they'd have to consider it.
