More Interest This Year In Huron County Summer Company Program

This year's Summer Company program in Huron County attracted a lot of attention.

The Huron County Small Business Centre invites students every spring to apply for funding to start their own summer business.

Students between the ages of fifteen and twenty-nine are eligible as long as they are returning to school in the fall.    Applicants must submit a business plan.

Successful applicants can receive up to $3,000 in grants -- $1,500 at the beginning of the summer for start-up and the remainder at the end of the summer if they complete all of the program requirements.

Small Business Centre Coordinator Nicki Darbyson believes the personal mentoring the students get through the process is probably more important than the money.

"I think that is even more important than some of the training because it's really geared towards the students' needs and it's very individualized and getting that kind of experience from seasoned business owners is just something that you can't really put a value on," she says.

The program was looking for six applicants and this year, and they received ten. Darbyson says it's encouraging to see it become a more competitive program.
