Students protest sex ed curriculum

Students at about 100 schools across Ontario have walked out of class to support a modern sex education curriculum.

A group of F E Madill Students in Wingham organized a walkout Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. to ask the province to support the 2015 sex-ed curriculum instead of reverting back to a 1998 program.

One of the student protesters told CKNX News that in today's society, it is important to know about various gender identities before they head out into the real world.

"There's a group of students here at F E Madill that don't believe in the curriculum change, to change back to the old curriculum and we believe that we should be taught the 2014 curriculum covering things in sex ed that we think we should be aware of," she explained.

The province is mandating teachers use a nearly 20-year-old curriculum until they consult with parents and create a new sex ed program.

The government said anyone interested in the curriculum can take part in public consultations that could begin as early as next week.
