The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation is receiving $100,000 federal EcoAction funding over the next three years.
The money will be used to support urban and rural stormwater improvements for Lake Huron projects in the watershed.
Wetlands Specialist Angela Van Niekerk said that by establishing retention ponds on the edges of fields, that can slow the flow of water off the land. Buffer strips will along be created along creeks and rivers that flow into Lake Huron.
"Trying to keep it on the landscape for as long as possible before it goes into the creeks and rivers and so it slows it down," said Van Niekerk. "As well, the longer and slower it sits on the landscape, the more it can be filtered by infiltration through the soils and that improves the water quality."
Van Niekerk said the funding will be spread over three years and rural and urban landowners can apply for projects on their land through the EcoAction fund as well as other sources of funding.
Interested landowners in the watershed can contact the ABCA for technical advice as well as possible funding.
