Central Huron council has decided to allow retail cannabis stores in the municipality.
Mayor, Jim Ginn, says council felt they already allow wineries and breweries in downtown Clinton so, with cannabis being legal, they thought it's another store and gives people another reason to come downtown so they would allow it.
Only 25 retail outlets are being allowed initially, throughout the Province, so allowing one doesn't mean Central Huron would get one and at this point no one has proposed opening one in the municipality.
Ginn says he understands they'll rolled out in allotments because there's a shortage of product right now so some municipalities will get one and others will have to wait.
“So we would allow someone to set up a cannabis shop in Central Huron. You know we do allow wineries and breweries downtown, so with cannabis being legal we just thought, you know, it's another store front, another reason for people to come into town and we would allow it.”
“They're gonna roll it out in allotments because, apparently, there's a short supply, so some municipalities will be allowed to have them and it'll be rolled out that way so we may never get one, we may get one in a couple of years, who knows.”
