The mayor of Saugeen Shores is seeking consistency when it comes to municipalities placing additional regulations on the consumption of cannabis.
Luke Charbonneau said he fears a confusing layer of regulations will leave cannabis by-laws unenforceable if they vary too much from municipality to municipality.
He said boundaries are not always clear, particularly away from roadways.
"If it Saugeen Shores, we have rules that say you can't smoke cannabis on the beach, and up the coastline in Sauble Beach they say you can, just theoretically, that's going to be impossible for both of us to enforce," said Charbonneau. "Frankly, very few people know where the boundary line between the municipality of South Bruce Peninsula and the municipality of Saugeen Shores is."
Charbonneau said the discussion on cannabis regulation should be held at a regional level, backing a suggestion from Bruce County Warden Mitch Twolan to take the topic to the Grey Bruce Health Unit's board of health.
"If we can have a regional discussion about what cannabis regulation in our region should be, I think that's a great idea and I'm certainly interested at Saugeen Shores to receive input from the region about what direction we ought to go all together on that issue," said Charbonneau.
Saugeen Shores council is expected to discuss cannabis at its January 14 meeting.
