Wellington County is investigating the possibility of a seniors' community adjacent to the Wellington Terrace Long Term Care facility in Aboyne in Centre Wellington.
Warden Kelly Linton said there is a serious lack of seniors' and affordable housing in the county.
"We're looking at almost a four-year wait time to get into Wellington Terrace, and that's just not acceptable, so I think there really is a need," said Linton.
The county is looking at a campus-style housing development for seniors.
Linton explained there would be a variety of styles of housing, "so seniors can live at different times in their life and they could have different options of ownership."
Wellington County Council gave the concept widespread agreement, and will now start to discuss how to move forward with the idea.
Council set aside a million dollars in this year's budget to begin the investigation and planning.
"There's a number of studies, a number of drawings, engineering, and business planning activities that have to happen to move forward with this," said Linton.
He said housing was a big issue on the campaign trail for municipal politicians in the recent election.
"We heard some of the challenges that are being faced by seniors and our population is getting older, and this isn't going to be something that goes away, so as a good accountable government, we have to make sure that we are bringing solutions where we need to," said Linton.
