Local school board focuses on extension in recent funding announcement

A superintendent for the Avon Maitland District School Board says there are still details to work out with the recent funding announcement regarding supports for students with autism.

Kim Black, the superintendent of Learning Services, said the grant of $12,300 per student is on par to what they received before but the date to qualify for that funding has been extended.

“They did mention that they have extended our March 31 count date, which we are very pleased to hear. So any new-coming students that would qualify under their extension, would be allocated the $12,300," said Black.

The grant of $12,300 for each student with autism has not changed.

“They mentioned the Special Education Allotment did provide students with needed equipment, resources, laptops, that will continue. Special Incidents Portion, that will continue in our grant money,” added Black.

The announcement also made reference to an extension of a pilot project for an after-school skills development program.

The Avon Maitland District School Board was not part of that pilot program so they don't have any information on that at this time.
