The Municipality of Brockton has voted down a motion to discuss a county-wide police force with Bruce County.
Councillor Chris Oberle's motion was supported by both Mayor Chris Peabody and Deputy Mayor Dan Gieruszak, however, they were defeated by the four remaining members of council, with councillor Steve Adams calling it "inappropriate use of staff time".
The motion was to direct Mayor Peabody and staff to "discuss a county-wide police service with the County of Bruce".
Oberle said the move would have allowed council to "have all the information to make a proper, informed decision," and if the motion had been successful, it would have "at least brought it to the county level to open a discussion on the matter."
After council, Oberle expressed frustration at the motion failing.
"There's concerns in the former townships. I've heard from residents that response times are definitely an issue for them, and that they have started thinking about not even bothering to phone the OPP because they don't have confidence that they'll respond within a reasonable time," he said.
This motion has appeared on Brockton's agenda each of the municipality's last three council meetings.
Brockton's contract with the Ontario Provincial Police is set to expire at the end of June.
