Hikers will have some extra peace of mind as they travel along the 11 kilometres of trails in Hanover. Hanover dignitaries have officially launched the "Eyes and Ears" initiative.
The plan includes volunteer patrols, an increased police presence and the installation of trail marker signage. Hanover Parks and Recreation Director Sherri Walden said so far 15 community members have been approved as volunteers.
"If you are a trail user, and you are out there, maybe you are experiencing something you didn't anticipate and you somebody with that identifiable clothing, they might be able to assist you, as well," she explained.
The apparel is red and includes either a ball cap, t-shirt, vest or jacket with the town's logo on the apparel item. These individuals will be noting any areas of concern such as needed maintenance or mischief, such as graffiti, to town staff and Hanover Police Service. The overall intent is a reduced level of reported incidents.
All volunteers have completed Police and Vulnerable Sector Checks. The volunteers have been provided with an identification card. While the program has just formally been launched, a number of volunteers have been providing "Eyes and Ears" notes for some time. The initiative was launched in February after a couple of incidents along the trails make people uneasy.
Hanover Lions Club, Hanover Car Dealers Association and Canadian Tire have helped provide over $6,000 of cash and equipment that will allow officers to be visible and accessible with a bike patrol unit. The Hanover Police Service will be enhancing their regular patrols on the trails through September.
“Our Bike Patrol Unit will enhance our Community Trail and Downtown Core patrols that will create a more visible, engaging experience between our police officers and the members of the public," said Police Chief Chris Knoll.
‘This is another great example of our community’s commitment to making Hanover a safer place to be," said Mayor Sue Paterson. "Concerned community residents, in partnership with municipal staff and Hanover Police Services have stepped up to the plate in creating this tremendous initiative."
